The Moment I Stopped Cutting MyselfApril 25, 2010I have finally found a game that answers the question, “can games make you cry?”. It’s not what you think. Sexy Time in GamesJanuary 29, 2010I was a huge God of War fan back in the PS2 era, but now that I am only sporting a 360 as my current generation console, I’ve been looking for something to fill the void. I recently played the Dante’s Inferno demo from Xbox Live to hedge my bets on buying the game. Though the gameplay itself has a fair amount of Kratos-like ass kicking, there was another element to the game that really put me off, gratuitous nudity. (more…) Fable IIJanuary 18, 2010So I finally got around to playing Fable II. I never played the first Fable, but I was told that Fable II was simply bigger and better so I skipped the first. It was on my Christmas list last year, but it didn’t show up under the tree until this year. Overall, I enjoyed the game, despite the numerous reasons to put the controller down. (more…) Team Fortress 2 and SourceNovember 1, 2009I recently developed an mild obsession over Team Fortress 2. I know, I am about a year or two behind the crowd here, but I couldn’t pass up a deal like $2.50 for such a high quality game. I’ve had my share of ups and downs with TF2 however. Some of my best moments in this game have been unexpected experiences. I deeply enjoyed the little things they added to the game, like marking a player who has killed you repeatedly; giving you the drive to seek him out and crush him. I also enjoyed the little RPG-like bonus that players receive for playing extended periods of time or accomplishing impossible tasks. The whole game was put together very well, except for one thing… Wolfenstein: A Sad Day for PC’sAugust 24, 2009When I walked into my local Best Buy to purchase the new Wolfenstein I was asking myself the fateful question, “what platform should I buy this game on?”. I was, after all, an Xbox 360 owner and I do have a fair gaming rig, certainly not the top tier. Truthfully, it wasn’t much of a question. (more…) Why it’s Bad to TryAugust 2, 2009I recently started up a new game of Dead Space. Overall I recall having an enjoyable time the first go around and thought I’d play the role of completionist and pick up a few extra achievements. The first time I played Dead Space, it took me about 11 hours to beat the game, but I poked in ever corner and picked up just about every item I could along the way. I also played the entire game with just the plasma cutter; using the ammo from the other weapons as sale items to help feed my need for power nodes. I suppose this was made easier by the download for the Elite Suit on Live. It felt kind of like cheating to start out with a level-5 armored suit but it was free and I guess that means they wanted me to use it =). There were a couple minor flaws in the game, like not knowing the subtle distinction between fear and anxiety… The constant loops of pipe banging were more nauseating than fear inducing. They often left me muting the game; especially while in a menu. Fading the environment sounds while navigating through the store or upgrade kiosk would have been a much welcome addition. Other than that little nuisance, I’d almost call it a perfect 5/5 game… Almost… which leads to the point of this post! Games should not try to be something they were never meant to be; they should focus on what makes them fun and exploit that nugget of goodness. The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark AthenaMay 9, 2009Okay, I had very mixed feelings about buying this game. Reviews were really hard on it, but I never got a chance to play Butcher Bay on the original XBox so this was an opportunity for me to catch up on both titles as once. I’m also probably one of the ten people who actually enjoyed the movie chronicles; though I do enjoy watching bad sci-fi for some strange reason. I know I’ve said in the past that I would never pay $60 for a generic FPS game, but this one seems to have some real firsts in it and I wanted to try it for myself. It also helps that I had a $50 Best Buy gift card and I was basically paying for two $30 games and not just one $60 game. In the end two full games for $10 is not half bad. |
