ITSEC is possibly one of the worst times of the year and easily one of the worst events in my career. It’s a time for business men to work their chop and stomp the yard for any year-end scraps of cash and possible leads on money for the next year. It’s where all the used car salesmen of this industry get together and trade business cards in hopes of extracting slivers of funds from each other. (more…)

So I got my evaluation today by my employer. It was “fair”, but not even close to what I was expecting. I took on a lot of responsibilities this year and there is even more waiting for me in the new year. After dealing with mountains of government paperwork, and being responsible for multiple concurrent projects, and somehow still being expected to code, while traveling, and dealing with redundant status reports and meetings, I managed to do it all for what amounted to a “fair” annual adjustment but not a raise by any standard. That was pretty disappointing…
Given the current state of the industry, it’s hard to say what anyone is worth anymore, but after a year like the one I had, I know I am worth more than this. =( Oh well, I make enough to live on, but I am definitely starting to scratch at the glass ceiling resting comfortably at arms length with this employer. It might be a good time to start thinking about my future. I do like that work schedules are very flexible here and it gives me time to focus on Inland Studios, but I have to stop and really think if I’m okay with my current salary or if it’s time to move on to a company that can afford me. Tough call; it’s going to be an interesting year I think.
Maybe I’ll do more research into job descriptions and propose a new salary that compliments my responsibilities, but I hate to haggle over salaries; it’s so petty and any employer should just put their best offer on the table and stop the used car salesman tactics. Who knows. With the drop in the recent markets, maybe it was a fair raise.

I recently bought a new camcorder and discovered upon transfering my first recording that the video is in MP4. Are you kidding me?!? Of all the formats, it had to be the least supported codec in the history of popular formats. Not only that, but HD video is clocking in at around 52MB per minute!! Not bad, until you realize that the image is interlaced. Seriously, why call it “Full HD” when it’s only half the image? I can understand if the video was bloated because the format was old or lower quality, but we are talking about MP4 here. I would have preferred to see an AVI coded in DIVX, XVID, OGG, MKV, or any one of the dozens of formats used by the rest of the freaking world… I’m not terribly happy right now, but this is my first digital camcorder, so I’ll keep it as training wheels. I could go on about the grainy image, the lackluster auto-focus, or the fact that it’s so small it cramps your hands and your finger pass clear over the buttons unless you are a 7th grader, but does any of that matter when you are stuck with a final video format that doesn’t even play inside of Window Media Player?
Samsung SIO “Full HD” – you get a 2/5. I would have given it a 1, except the interface and touch screen are fairly easy to use and mostly intuitive. For the price I expected something better than a Flip.

Okay, I have a feeling that this post is going to feel a lot like a whining session since I don’t have any hard numerical data to support my bullish cries. What I have to say certainly feels like the truth however.

Maya 2009 was the first venture into 64bit, but it wasn’t until my recent brush with a dieing computer that I had access to a 64bit version of Windows. I’ve been getting a lot of requests for an x64 version of the Maya 2009 plug-in and here it is.

I recently developed an mild obsession over Team Fortress 2. I know, I am about a year or two behind the crowd here, but I couldn’t pass up a deal like $2.50 for such a high quality game. I’ve had my share of ups and downs with TF2 however. Some of my best moments in this game have been unexpected experiences. I deeply enjoyed the little things they added to the game, like marking a player who has killed you repeatedly; giving you the drive to seek him out and crush him. I also enjoyed the little RPG-like bonus that players receive for playing extended periods of time or accomplishing impossible tasks. The whole game was put together very well, except for one thing…
