Writing is Hard!

I know I’ve been slacking on my blogs lately.  I’ve been trying to save my typing fingers for the book.  I’ve actually had a small stint of inspiration today and got down a few good words.  I’ve discovered that it’s tough to write a book if you want to do it right.   I’m a very picky person, and I tend to tear movies and other story mediums apart.  This includes my own writing.  It doesn’t help that I generally only get about 4 hours a week to write.  Any amateur writer out there knows that it’s a spit in the ocean to get 4 hours a week to sit and write something creative… =(

I have one simple rule that tends to weed out a lot of movies, books, and game stories for me.  It is simply this: “If I can remove a major portion of the characters and events from the plot, and still make sense of the story, then it wasn’t worth watching/reading.”  Too many films and other storytelling mediums create a collection of scenes, but they don’t often contribute to the final resolution of the story.  Movies like Transformers 2 crushed my spirits when I mentally removed 95% of the film to uncover the weak dingle-berry that they called a main plot.  I am doing my best to create a full length story that focuses on the characters adventures, without too much filler.  I’d like to think that my only filler is that which details the environment; the paragraphs that give you a sense of locality and spatial awareness.  I try to keep my chapters unrestrained, so that each chapter is moving the plot, even if only by a little.

I’m hoping that this approach will offer a fairly intriguing story and may peak some interest for any potential readers out there!  My only fear is that it may not even reach 200 pages, but I am far from that milestone, so I’ll hold my tongue until that day comes that I’m writing “fin” on the last page =).
